About This Project

‘Walking with Camilo’ is a play that tells the most important events in the life of the first Portuguese writer that managed to survive solely on his literary work and exposes the viewer to the controversial spirit of Camilo, the lover of letters and the troubled love life of the author. The show was promoted by Livraria Lello during the months of August and September 2017.

Through the entertaining narration of the writer’s story, it’s intended to captivate the younger audience for an extensive literary work, so often hard to access outside the school framework. The language of the play mixes historical and period expressions with current music and aesthetics, such as rap.

Synopsis:
The play is a journey through some emblematic moments of the life of one of the greatest authors of Portuguese literature, Camilo Castelo Branco (March 16th, 1825 – June 1st, 1890). His origins, the coming to Porto, the literary life of the cafes of the time, the passion between Camilo and Ana Plácido, the trial for adultery, the life sentence which was riddled with plights like his blindness, that led the author to suicide, are some of the topics covered by this humorous play.

On stage for 40 minutes, 2 actors play eighteenth-century characters that parade through scenes of dueling, scenes of love and friendship and even a hip-hop. This piece is full of details and specifics that help to understand the body of work of Camilo Castelo Branco.
